Rio de Janeiro is the Brazilian state that received the most ventilators from the federal government since the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis: 1,137 devices.

The number represents 10.21% of all ventilators distributed by the government of President Jair Bolsonaro, according to a dataset published by Brazilian authorities.

Led by Wilson Witzel, a political enemy of Bolsonaro, Rio faces a financial calamity and a lack of staff and resources in public hospitals.

Reporting 254 885 coronavirus cases, Rio de Janeiro, however, is not the Brazilian state with the highest number of coronavirus cases. São Paulo records 951 973 infections and has received 1,110 ventilators from federal authorities.

Rio and Sao Paulo constitute 20.1% of total ventilators offered by Bolsonaro’s government. The last 79.9% were distributed between 25 other Brazilian states.

The top 5 ventilators distribution ranking is completed by Minas Gerais (276 314 coronavirus cases and 914 ventilators), Rio Grande do Sul (179 436 cases and 853 ventilators) and Bahia (299 415 cases and 789 ventilators).

In general, the southern region of Brazil, where GDP is higher, received more ventilators than the northern region, which is also affected by the coronavirus. In Ceará, there are 236 591 infections and only 323 devices have been delivered.
